Love leads way at Masters
Padraig Harrington of Ireland shows the way to his caddie Dave McNeilly on the ninth hole
The way forward: Harrington began in stunning style
Davis Love III tamed the new-look Augusta on a fascinating opening day at the 66th US Masters.

The American carded a five-under-par 67 to top a glittering leaderboard - with some of the biggest names in golf snapping at his heels.

Defending champion Tiger Woods is within sight of Love on two-under, while Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Jose Maria Olazabal are all handily placed.

But one of the most impressive performances in the opening round of the first Major of 2002 came from Padraig Harrington.

Much had been made of the radical changes to the famous old course, with 300 yards added in an attempt to nullify the big-hitters.

But Harrington got off to a sensational start, as six birdies in the first 11 holes gave him a surprise three-shot lead.

The Irish Ryder Cup player struggled in the later stages of his round, dropping three shots in the last six holes to fall back to three-under.

He is one stroke ahead of Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke, who birdied the 18th for a 70.

Woods is bidding to retain his US Masters title
Love, who has one of the best drives in the business, showed Augusta can still be conquered with accuracy off the tee and a precise short game.

He did not drop a shot on day one, as five birdies took him ahead of the field.

Garcia birdied three holes in a row from the 15th only to bogey the last when he had a chance for a share of the lead.

He had to settle for second place on four-under, alongside Argentina's Angel Cabrera.

Woods, whose previous successes at Augusta had sparked the decision to transform the course, had a rollercoaster day.

Three birdies in a row gave him a share of the early lead, before he dropped three shots in the next nine holes to fall back to level par.

Retief Goosen is bidding to add the Masters title to his US Open crown
US Open champion Retief Goosen started solidly
Woods is not the greatest player in the game for nothing, however, and he finished in fine style.

Birdies at 15 and 17, plus a superb par-save from the trees at the last, gave him a two-under 70 and put him in fine shape for a successful defence of his title.

"I just wanted shoot better than even par today, that was the goal," said Woods.

"You just want to keep yourself in the tournament."
