| Tiger just too good
An absolutely triumphant effort from Tiger Woods. He's a superstar. He has this ability to peak at the Majors. Coming into the tournament he was not at his very best, not quite the red-hot favourite he has been in the past. But he just turns it on and early on today he saw off the opposition.
You felt that whatever they threw at him, which turned out to be not a lot, he would come up with something else. Augusta suits his game down to the ground, even with the changes, and especially with it being so wet. He has got a better nerve than the rest and was just totally in control of his ball - he virtually had it on a string. At the start of today's final round it looked like being a lot closer but sometimes that's how these things turn out.
There was a bit of thrusting going on by the chasing pack but mostly the others just made mistakes. Goosen made a poor start, exactly what he would have been dreading, Mickelson floundered and Els racked up an eight on 13 to snuff out his chance. Tiger began the day well, going par-birdie-birdie-par, while the chasers took risks and ran up some big numbers, especially trying to force birdies out of the par fives. Nerveless golf Woods, though, just let it happen and cruised through. He drove beautifully, he holed a lot of critical putts of six to eight feet, mostly for par, and he was in total control of his game, playing nerveless golf. Woods has now got seven Majors under his belt and has won six of his last 10 Major tournaments. He makes no secret of the fact that he is gunning for Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 Major titles. He could almost beat that just at Augusta - it suits him so ideally. The season Grand Slam is not impossible but it is incredibly hard to win on all those different courses. But as Nicklaus himself used to say, if you don't win the first one then you can't win the Grand Slam. |
