| Tigerwatch: Round Two Woods resumed his second round with rain still falling Hole-by-hole coverage of reigning champion Tiger Woods' second round at the Masters. Woods teed off at 1838 BST on Friday with fellow American Bubba Dickerson and Toshi Izawa of Japan. After his round of 70 in the first round, Woods needs another good round. He begins with an almost perfect drive to stay clear of the trees he found in the opening round. But his approach shot sails long to the back of the green with his birdie putt stopping just short of the cup leaving him an easy tap-in for par. Woods has another good drive at the longest hole on the course. But again his second shot is a poor one and sails over the gallery and almost onto the third hole fairway. His chip onto the green is also off the mark and he needs two putts to earn par. Another par for Woods at the par-four third as he struggles to challenge the leaders. Two under A fourth consecutive par for Woods on a hole he birdied in his opening round. Two under Woods' legion of fans are still waiting for their hero to make his charge, as he continues his steady effort with yet another par. He is now five shots behind leader Vijay Singh. Two under The short 180 yard par three fails to bring Woods his first birdie of the second round. But the par is an improvement on yesterday as he shot a bogey here in the first round.
Relief for Woods as the 410 yard par four gives the defending champion his first birdie of the second round. But there is bad news on the 18th as Vijay Singh shoots a phenomenal 30 on the back nine to extend his lead to nine under par. Woods had no luck on this hole in the first round with the pin at the front of the green. And he finds little success with the pin further back as he shoots his seventh par of the round. A mediocre approach shot gives Woods a long putt and little chance of grabbing his second birdie. But he almost pulls off a remarkable recovery with a monster 50-foot putt just catching the lip of the hole on its way through. Woods bogeyed the 495-yard "Camellia" in the first round, but sets himself up with a marvellous approach shot to within 20-feet of the pin. But his birdie putt pulls up two yards short and Woods only manages another par. Play suspended on Friday due to rain
Round Two resumed on Saturday at 1400 BST. Despite some slightly wayward hitting, Woods sinks a vital 13-foot putt to save par and stay within reach of the leaders. Woods begins with a sound tee shot onto the green, avoiding the bunker he found in his opening round, but disappointment follows as a brilliant birdie putt is held up by the wet ground and pulls up millimetres short. Three under Luck appears to be on Woods' side as his second shot flies perilously close to Rae's Creek but eventually rests on the bank. A delicate chip onto the green pulls up shorter than he would have liked but he nonetheless holes the 12-foot putt for a slightly fortuitous birdie, his second of the round. After a bogey in his first round, Woods again struggles to come to terms with the par-four 14th, his second shot almost sliding off the green, much to his disgust. It leaves him with a difficult birdie attempt which he misjudges before a four-foot putt saves the par. Woods is beginning to get into his stride as a massive 318-foot tee shot and a clinical approach set up an eagle opportunity. His putt pulls up short but a third birdie of the round moves him into fourth position on the leaderboard, level with Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia and Angel Cabrera. Another hole which Woods failed to get to grips with in the first round, he again cannot take advantage of the short hole. A reasonable tee shot is followed by another misjudged putt and in the end he does well to hole from five feet to save par. Woods looks disconsolate as he hits another untidy tee shot which ends in the rough. An attempted sliced second shot lands in a bunker and the defending champion is relieved to escape with a par. Woods fails to find inspiration on the final hole of the second round. A 307-yard tee shot lands in the rough and his 9-iron approach is well wide of the pin. A relatively simple two-putt brings to an end a solid but unspectacular round of 69. |
