| Singh surges clear at Masters Singh produced a superb charge on the back nine Click here for collated second round scores Play will resume at 1315 BST for those players yet to compete their second rounds. The third round will start at 1545 BST approximately. Saturday's live coverage begins at 1250 BST on BBC Two. Vijay Singh took a huge stride towards another US Masters title with a stunning display in a rain-hit second round at Augusta. The 2000 champion hit a magnificent 65 on Friday to move to nine-under-par at the half-way stage. Retief Goosen was the Fijian's nearest challenger, three strokes behind and on the 12th hole when the heavens opened and play was suspended.
"I played really good today but I was kind of worried about the weather starting out," said Singh. "It was really wet out there at the start. I'm normally not a good wet-weather player but the sun came out later on and I hit it solid and putted nicely all day." If Singh produced the best score of the day, the undoubted star of proceedings was golf legend Arnold Palmer - in his last ever Masters round. The four-time champion, who is quitting Augusta at the age of 72, was given an incredible reception by the galleries. But Palmer's emotional farewell will be prolonged by one more day, as the weather ensured he would have to complete his second round on Saturday - along with 35 other players. Padraig poised The European challenge was again led by Ireland's Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia of Spain, who are in joint third spot alongside Angel Cabrera of Argentina. And a host of big names - including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jose Maria Olazabal - are just behind them on three-under.
Singh's efforts earned him a course record for the new-look Augusta National, which has been lengthened by 300 yards for 2002. There was no sign of the pyrotechnics to come, though, when he parred the first seven holes. But a birdie at the eighth kickstarted Singh's challenge - and he blazed through the back nine in just 30 strokes, with four more birdies and an eagle at the par-five 15th. Singh's previous best was 67 in 2000, when he went on to claim his first green jacket. But ominously for he rivals he said: "I'm a better player than I was two years ago." Bjorn's birdie bonanza Singh's playing partner, Thomas Bjorn, was not to be out-done though, as the Dane also found some record-breaking form.
"I'd say a couple of times a year, you get on a streak like that," Bjorn said. "But hardly ever at the start of a round, and never on a course like this. It was almost too easy." Harrington, whose round would have been even better had he not seen an eagle putt lip out at the 15th, remains in with a chance of his first Major title - but he knows there is a long way to go. "You would think a green jacket would suit an Irishman," he joked, "but we will have to wait and see." |
