| Tuesday, 11 February, 2003, 22:52 GMT Burnley sink Bees ![]() Robbie Blake opened the scoring Brentford 0-3 Burnley Burnley withstood a second-half onslaught from luckless Brentford before snatching two late goals to secure their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup at Griffin Park. The First Division side led when Robbie Blake pounced on sloppy defending in the 52nd minute. But Wally Downes' team refused to lie down and laid siege to the Burnley goal in search of an equaliser.
But Paul Cook and Glen Little broke their hearts with two goals in the last five minutes. The First Division side took the lead when Blake tucked away his 11th goal of the season following wing-back Andy Frampton's indecision. Brentford then launched a series of attacks, forcing goalkeeper Marlon Beresford into a series of magnificent saves as they threatened to equalise. But a mistake by Ibrahim Sonko let in Cook for the second after 86 minutes, and Little wrapped it up from close range three minutes later. Despite the scoreline, it was Brentford who had looked the most likely winners.
And immediately after Blake's goal they forced Beresford into another superb save to tip Jay Smith's header round the post.
But a combination of the cross bar and Beresford's athleticism frustrated Brentford and Burnley booked their fifth-round spot. Brentford: Paul Smith, Dobson, Roget (Williams 41), Sonko, Marshall, Frampton, O'Connor (Somner 24) (Peters 84), Jay Smith, Hunt, Hughes, Vine. Burnley: Beresford, West, Gnohere, Branch, Diallo, Cook, Grant, Briscoe, Taylor, Ian Moore (Alan Moore 67), Blake (Little 80). Booked: Taylor. Attendance: 9,563 Referee: K Hill (Hertfordshire). |
