| Tuesday, 11 February, 2003, 23:10 GMT Stoke see off Bournemouth ![]() Gudjonsson challenges Bournemouth's Thomas Stoke 3-0 Bournemouth Chris Iwelumo struck twice to see off the stubborn resistance of 10-man Bournemouth at the Britannia Stadium. Iwelumo struck from a twice-taken penalty after goalkeeper Chris Tardif had been sent off on the stroke of half-time, then struck a second early in the second half. And the Cherries' cup run was finally ended by Peter Hoekstra's superb third eight minutes from time.
An opening period of testing and probing provided plenty of frustration but precious few chances as both sides continually ran up against brick walls in defence. Bournemouth threatened first when Gareth O'Connor's pass found Wade Elliott, who cut inside and fired against the far post from the edge of the area. James Hayter then screwed a shot across goal from just outside the penalty area but Bournemouth's challenge faded as the home side gradually wore down the visitors' resistance. Chris Greenacre sent a header narrowly wide and Bjarni Gudjonsson drove over the bar as Stoke began to take control. But the game only really burst to life on the stroke of half time. Greenacre's shot on the run was well kept out by Tardif, but the star of Bournemouth's third round penalty shoot-out win over Crewe went from hero to villain in the space of a minute.
Tardif was sent off for the challenge and Iwelumo kept his cool to beat reserve keeper Gareth Stewart from the penalty spot. In fact, the striker had to do it twice after referee Mike Ryan ruled out his original kick for encroachment, Iwelumo nervelessly slotting into the same bottom left-hand corner of Stewart's net on both occasions. So it must have felt like a hat-trick of sorts when Iwelumo pounced again six minutes into the second half. Greenacre found himself in acres of space wide on the left and his cross sat up kindly for the alert Iwelumo to turn home. Greenacre was inches wide with a shot minutes later as Stoke continued to pour forward and Cherries were limited to a Steve Fletcher shot that flew straight goalkeeper Steve Banks. But Hoekstra put the seal on Stoke's win when he drilled home a low shot from the edge of the Bournemouth penalty area eight minutes from the end.
