United's 6-0 demolition of the hapless Hammers was the pick of Sunday's FA Cup ties. Ryan Giggs, with only one goal in his previous 25 games for United, scored twice, as did Ruud van Nistelrooy. Defender Phil Neville and substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer completed the rout for Sir Alex Ferguson's goal hungry Reds.
In a game of few chances, Palace nearly snatched a dramatic late victory, only for Tony Popovic to see his header flicked over the bar by Emile Heskey. Liverpool's day was further dampened by an injury to goalkeeper Chris Kirkland, who was hurt in a collision with Palace striker Dele Adebola. Chelsea ensured there would be no repeat of Shrewsbury's third round giantkilling, as the Premiership side won 4-0 at Gay Meadow. Gianfranco Zola scored twice and set up one for Carlton Cole while Jody Morris added another for the Londoners. Fulham cruised through an all-Premiership clash with Charlton, Steed Malbranque scoring a hat-trick in a 3-0 win. Malbranque struck twice from the penalty spot, either side of a neat right-foot shot, all his goals arriving in the second half. First Division Stoke saw off Bournemouth by the same scoreline, the Third Division side reduced to 10 men following a red card for goalkeeper Chris Tardif. The major fourth round shocks were reserved exclusively for Saturday's matches. Third Division Rochdale continued their dream run with an impressive 2-0 win over Coventry City at Spotland. Paul Connor and Gareth Griffiths scored the goals that sent Dale into the last 16.
But the fairytale runs of non-league sides Farnborough and Dagenham & Redbridge came to an end. Farnborough were beaten 5-1 by Arsenal at Highbury and Daggers went down to a last-minute goal at Norwich. Southampton were rescued by a last-minute equaliser from Kevin Davies against Millwall. Gillingham held Leeds to a 1-1 draw and Premiership rivals Sunderland and Blackburn fought out a 3-3 draw at Ewood Park. Wolves had few problems disposing of Leicester as they won 4-1, while Sheffield United triumphed 4-3 in a thriller with Ipswich. The other all-First Division game saw Walsall edge out Wimbledon 1-0 at the Bescot Stadium. Burnley won 3-0 at Brentford with all three goals coming in the second half |
