Nasser Hussain's England had been frustrated by the bad weather during the Bangalore Test, but remained hopeful that they would be able to grab a win and level the series - weather permitting. They had established a lead of 133 despite having had just over an hour's play on Saturday. Play was expected to resume at 0930 local time (0400 BST) on Sunday, but the wet ground forced officials to delay any possible start until after an 1130 inspection.
But further rain during that period left ICC match referee Denis Lindsay and captains Hussain and Sourav Ganguly with no choice but to abandon the contest as a draw. "The earliest we could have started was 1300," said Lindsay. "That would have left us with 63 overs, and the captains seemed fine for play to start again at that time. "But with the further rain, we all knew that there was not going to be a result."
