The tourists collapsed from 206-3 to 219-6 after Michael Vaughan was out in highly unusual fashion, becoming only the seventh man in the history of Test cricket to be out handled the ball. He had made an excellent 64 and was looking to nail home England's advantage with Mark Ramprakash when the bizarre incident happened. The fourth wicket pair had added 113 runs before the mini-collapse, and things might have been worse if Craig White and Jamie Foster had not recovered things at the end.
Vaughan was out when, facing Sarandeep Singh, he missed with a sweep shot before deciding to grab hold of the ball on the crease without realising the fatal consequences. Sarandeep immediately struck twice more to change the complexion of the match in dramatic fashion. The off-spinner, making his first appearance of the series, removed Andrew Flintoff for a duck and Ramprakash for 54. Flintoff, whose batting has been feeble on this tour, was tamely caught at midwicket for a duck. And Ramprakash, trying to hide the bat, was caught at first slip. He looked unlucky to be given out, though, as the ball appeared to come off his pad.
England won the toss and elected to bat but the start of play was delayed due to heavy overnight dew. Soon after the start of play, Srinath had Marcus Trescothick caught at second slip for just eight. Butcher and Hussain then survived a few alarms to add 47 - only for Butcher to be needlessly run out for 27. Early in the middle session, Srinath, on his home pitch, grabbed his second wicket as Nasser Hussain fenced at a leg-cutter and was out for 43. That made it 93 for three Fortunately for the tourists, however, Vaughan and Ramprakash clicked into gear, before England were rocked by the unsettling mini-collapse late in the day. India lead the series 1-0 after winning with ease in Mohali and earning a draw in the second Test at Ahmedabad - a match which was dominated by England.
