![]() | Flintoff treble boosts England ![]() Andrew Flintoff celebrates Deep Dasgupta's wicket Third Test, Bangalore, day two: England 336 all out v India 99-3 (stumps) England gained the upper hand in the third and final Test against India after reducing the home side to 99-3 at stumps. India will start the third day still 237 runs adrift of England's first innings total of 336 all out. Play ended prematurely on Thursday because of bad light. It was an exciting day's cricket, which saw England fightback with the bat, before Anil Kumble clinched his 300th Test wicket. And England's Andrew Flintoff took a Test-best wicket haul of 3-30.
Sachin Tendulkar is still there, having recorded yet another half-century, off 103 balls, with some master strokes. There was an ugly moment after tea when Tendulkar became incresingly frustrated at England's negative bowling tactics and he had a heated exchange with England captain Nasser Hussain. Match referee Denis Lindsay visited both teams' dressing rooms and asked them to cool things down. But the day belonged to England - especially Flintoff - who was aiming to put behind him his dreadful performance with the bat. Flintoff's first victim was Deep Dasgupta, who edged his shot to Marcus Trescothick in the slips for a duck. VVS Laxman was next when he was clean bowled for 12. And opener Shiv Shunder Das played on immediately after a drinks break to the delight of the England team. Earlier, England's innings had come to an end shortly after lunch as Anil Kumble became the first Indian spinner to claim 300 Test wickets.
Foster fell two runs short of his maiden Test half-century and Ashley Giles was out lbw for 28. Matthew Hoggard became Kumble's 300th Test victim when he was out lbw for one run. England had battled well in the first session, adding 70 runs to their overnight total for the loss of one wicket. Craig White was the early casualty when Javagal Srinath came round the wicket and forced White into a defensive shot, which was caught at short leg. In came Giles and he and Foster frustrated the Indian bowlers, adding a valuable 60-plus partnership before they crumbled after the interval. India lead the series 1-0 after a comprehensive victory in the first Test.
