Day three: European Athletics

Jonathan Edwards looks dejected after failing to retain the triple jump title
Edwards lost his European triple jump crown

The Great Britain team had mixed fortunes on day three in Munich, winning four medals, but seeing Jonathan Edwards relinquish his triple jump title.

Edwards was one of four British athletes to take a bronze as Sweden's Christian Olsson took gold with a leap of 17.53.

Daniel Caines was also disappointed with his bronze in the men's 400m, but in contrast Lee McConnell ran a personal best and was delighted with a bronze in the women's 400m.

Kelly Holmes was the fourth bronze medallist, finishing third in the 800m with a season's best.

But Holmes' remarks were overshadowed by a post-race row after she made comments suggesting that rival athletes may be involved in drug-taking.

It was a controversial evening as Darren Campbell was disqualified from the 200m for running on the inside line of his lane during his second round heat.

But team-mates Marlon Devonish and Christian Malcolm made the semi-finals of the 200m after comfortable performances

Thursday evening's action

Women's 400m final
Commonwealth silver medallist Lee McConnell produced a lifetime best performance as she grabbed an unexpected bronze.

McConnell, who only took up the 400m one year ago was a clear third behind Russian winner Olesya Zykina and second-placed Grit Breuer of Germany.

Zykina clocked 50.45 to win, while McConnell ran 51.02.

Women's 800m final
Battling Kelly Holmes took bronze for Britain but was powerless to prevent European number one Jolanda Ceplak recording a crushing win.

The Czech runner emulated Paula Radcliffe, taking the lead from the start powering to victory in 1:57.65.

Spain's Mayte Martinze pulled away from Commonwealth 1500m gold medallist Holmes to take silver in a personal best 1:58.86, while Holmes clocked a season's best 1:59.83.

Men's 400m final
Britain's 16-year hold on the European Championships 400m crown ended as Daniel Caines had to settle for bronze.

Germany's world indoor silver medallist Ingo Schultz delighted the near-capacity crown in the 68,000 Olympic Stadium with victory in 45.14 seconds.

Spain's David Canal snatched silver right on the line in a season's best 45.24 with Birmingham-based Caines third just 0.04secs adrift.

Women's 400m hurdles final
Romania's Ionela Tirlea recovered from an aborted attempt to qualify for the 200m semis during the afternoon by storming through to retain her title.

The Munich crowd were delighted as Germany's Heike Meissner took silver, while Britain's Natasha Danvers and Sinead Dudgeon were seventh and eighth respectively.

Men's 1500m final
France's Mehdi Baala took gold from Reyes Estevez of Spain by the smallest possible margin after a thrilling sprint finish.

Both runners were given the same time, and the Spanish runner had already taken a lap of honour after apparently being told the race had been judged a dead heat.

The officials took several minutes looking at photos, and confusion reigned as they attempted to separate them.

The British trio of Michael East, John Mayock and Anthony Whiteman found themselves muscled out of contention. East was highest-placed, as he finished sixth.

Men's high jump final
Russia's Yaroslav Rybakov won the men's high jump title with a leap of 2.31 metres.

Rybakov held off the threat of two Swedes. Stefan Holm came second with 2.29 and compatriot Staffan Strand came third with 2.27.

Women's javelin
Greece's Mirela Manjani won the women's javelin title with a throw of 67.47 metres.

German veteran Steffi Nerius took the silver medal with 64.09 while Finland's Mikaela Ingberg came third to win the bronze with 63.50.

Men's 400m hurdles semi-final
Chris Rawlinson qualified for Friday's 400m hurdles final after finishing second in his semi-final behind France's Stephane Diagana.

But Britain's Commonwealth champion instantly cast doubt over whether he would race in the final, after limping off the track, apparently with a knee injury.

Men's 200m second round
Darren Campbell was disqualified for running on the inside line of his lane during his round two heat.

Campbell won his heat with ease, but was subsequently eliminated after officials viewed replays of the race.

Great Britain team-mates Marlon Devonish and Christian Malcolm both qualified for the semi-finals after confident performances.

But Greece's Olympic champion Konstantinos Kenteris and Portugal's Francis Obikwelu are also through, and both looked in fine form.

Women's 200m second round
Britain's Shani Anderson, qualified for the semi-finals of the women's 200m as a fastest loser.

France's Muriel Hurtis was the quickest qualifier, in 22.86 seconds.

Men's decathlon
Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic took gold with a mammoth score of 8,800 points - 11 points shy of Daley Thompson's championship record.

Erki Nool of Estonia took silver and Lev Lobodin of Russia was third - after being made to wait 10 minutes while officials totted up his score.
