Russia's Olesya Zykina beat reigning champion and home favourite Grit Breuer to take gold in the women's 400m.

The Russian was clear in 50.45sec from Breuer who took silver with a time of 50.70.

Britain's Lee McConnell put in a personal best to take bronze in a time of 51.02.

The former high jumper carved 0.22 seconds off the best she set in the semi-final.

It was the third career-best run from McConnell in the space of four races having lowered it in the semi-final of the Commonwealth before taking silver in the final.

"Manchester has got to be a lot better for me because it was a home crowd, but I am delighted I stayed third," said McConnell.

"I thought I would come fourth here so I am still pretty shocked.

"Three of them have run a lot quicker than me but I am getting PBs every time I race which is good."
