Great Britain produced a golden double in the men's relays on the final day of the European Championships.

After Dwain Chambers had anchored the 4x100m team to victory, Daniel Caines carried the baton to success in the 4x400m.

It was Britain's fifth successive triumph in the latter event and capped a fine track campaign in Munich.

Jared Deacon ran the opening leg, followed by hurdler Matt Elias and Jamie Baulch before Caines held off the challenge of Russia and Poland to win in 3mins 01.25secs.

Poland were later disqualified after sending Germany's runner tumbling to earth on the second leg. The bronze went to France instead.

Earlier, the British 4x100m quartet of Christian Malcolm, Darren Campbell, Marlon Devonish and Chambers cruised to gold in 38.19 seconds.

Ukraine finished several metres behind the winners to claim silver and Poland edged out Germany to take bronze.

There were none of the problems which had dogged the British team at the Olympics and World Championships.

The baton changed hands smoothly all the way round - and individual 100m winner Chambers was left in the clear to charge to his second gold of the championships.

The victory gave them great satisfaction following the dispute which led to squad members Allyn Condon and Jason Gardener going home early after not being picked for the heats.

And it was an emotional moment for Campbell after the death of his grandfather this week.

"My grandfather died on Friday so this was a nice way to send him off," said Campbell.

"We just had to get the team spirit back and everyone lifted their game.

"We haven't got anything bad to say about the other guys. We made decisions and had to stick by that.

"The guys are as tired as I am and we had to dig deep. But we performed on the day and ran a great time in these conditions."
