French quartet snatch gold
France were behind in the early stages
France were behind in the early stages

Defending champions France edged out Germany with a thrilling late burst to retain their European 4x100m women's relay title.

The French quartet came home in a time of 42.46 seconds as Odiah Sidibe anchored them to victory down the home straight.

Germany finished in 42.54secs, with Russia taking bronze in 43.11.

The German team had qualified fastest for the final and looked set for gold after a storming start.

But Sandrine Felix closed the gap for France with a brilliant third leg round the turn and Sidibe made up a metre's deficit on Germany's Marion Wagner to take gold.
