The British quartet of Christian Malcolm, Darren Campbell, Marlon Devonish and Dwain Chambers won the event in a blistering time of 38.19 seconds.

But Condon and Jason Gardener were not on hand to enjoy the celebrations, having dropped out when they learned that they were not first-choice selections in Munich.

Gardener was given permission to pull out with a hamstring injury, but Condon was not excused and now faces the prospect of disciplinary action.

"I had a face to face with Jason, and he asked because of his hamstring injury if he could go home," said UK Athletics performance director Max Jones.

"His request was granted. However, Condon also asked to leave because he wasn't picked for the 4x100m heat. Permission was refused.

"He was unhappy with the selection," Jones told BBC Radio Five Live.

"We decided to go with our best four for the semi-final and final, which proved to be a good decision because they won easily."

Jones admitted that Condon's lottery funding could now come under scrutiny.

"He was on lottery for relay purposes and he wasn't available, so we'll go back and talk to UK Sport and we'll take a decision on that."

To add to the relay controversy, it has been reported that Gardener denies citing injury to excuse himself from the Europeans.

And he now plans to write to David Moorcroft, the chief executive of UK Athletics, to complain about the way the sprint squad is run.

"I'm not happy with the treatment I've got and the way the relay is organised," he told The Guardian newspaper.

"You can trace it right back to Sydney, which is why we didn't do very well there."
