| Schultz dashes Caines' dreams ![]() Ingo Schultz delighted the home fans Britain's Danny Caines had to settle for bronze in the men's 400m at the European Athletics Championships as Germany's Ingo Schultz proved the best runner on the night. David Canal of Spain picked up silver in a race that Schultz dominated from the start. Schultz set a ferocious pace, and Caines tried to run him down in the closing straight. But the German proved too strong, finishing in 45.14sec, and Canal came past Caines to finish second in 45.24. Caines' time of 45.26 left him disappointed again after he finished out of the medals in fourth at the Commonwealth Games. Caines looked set for victory as he got onto the German's shoulder in the home straight. But the extra power of Schultz - who was cheered on by a home crowd - allowed him to keep Caines just behind him and as the Briton tired in the final few metres Canal came through. Caines said: "This was not what I wanted - I did not have anything coming down the home straight. "It has been a trial for me and one that I was not ready for. But I am only 23. I just did not have anything when I needed it." |
