In a short career, Dementieva has already endured a lifetime of ups and downs.
Having burst onto the scene in 2000, the Russian was tipped by many to soon be challenging for Grand Slams.
Dementieva finished that year as 12th in the world, having reached the US Open semi-finals. She also won a silver medal at the Olympics.
Despite breaking into the top 10 in 2001, Dementieva's form fell away the following year - though her Grand Slam form remained consistent.
Her powerful baseline game brought her a first singles title this year when she won the Amelia Island event.
Dementieva beat the likes of Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport en route to the final.
She performed well at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round before losing to eventual champion Serena Williams.
