Having endured a frustrating 2002 season, Meghann Shaughnessy has shown evidence of a return to form this year.
The 24-year-old captured her first tour singles title at Shanghai in 2000 and reached the world's top 20 in May the following year.
But having established herself as a promising young American, Shaughnessy stuttered last season as a result of injury and loss of form.
She managed to beat only one top five player all year.
The American started 2003 with a bang when she rocketed to her third WTA title in Canberra - without dropping a set - and then reached her first Grand Slam quarter-final at the Australian Open.
She has since made the semi-finals in Scottsdale, the fourth round in Indian Wells and the last eight in Miami, but had a less fruitful time in Europe with early exits in the German Open and the Italian Masters.
At Roland Garros, she went out in the third round and she was disappointed with a first-round departure from Wimbledon.
Shaughnessy, though, is happiest on hard courts and, a back injury permitting, she will hope for a return to form at the US Open.
