The evergreen Spaniard is staging something of a revival this year, having looked close to retirement last season.
After reaching the final of the French Open in 2000, Martinez looked to have left her best tennis behind her, with injury keeping her out of action.
However, Martinez's looping groundstrokes have brought her surprising success this season.
In March, the 30-year-old reached the semi-finals at the high-quality Indian Wells tournament, losing to eventual champion Kim Clijsters.
And on her favourite surface of clay, she reached the last eight at the French Open - her first Grand Slam quarter-final since Wimbledon in 2001 - before losing again to eventual finalist Clijsters.
At Eastbourne, she reached her first grasscourt final since 1994 (at Wimbledon), losing to second seed Chanda Rubin but she could not maintain that form at the All England Club and went out in the third round.
Martinez has rarely thrived on the hard courts of America - although she reached the US Open quarter-finals in 1991.
