Clijsters' progress since she burst on to the scene in 2001 has been nothing short of phenomenal. The only thing missing now for the new world number one is a first Grand Slam title.
The Belgian sits ahead of Venus and Serena Williams and compatriot Justine Henin-Hardenne in the rankings and yet is the only one without a major to her name.
With Serena injured and Venus lacking match practice, Clijsters needs to step up and take her opportunity if she is to live up to her new status.
Her preparation has been impressive and she picked up a 15th career title in Stanford, defeating Jennifer Capriati in the final.
But defeat by Henin-Hardenne in the San Diego final hit hard and the usually placid Clijsters accused her fellow Belgian of underhand tactics.
Should they meet in New York, it should be a tantalising encounter - particularly after Henin-Hardenne beat Clijsters in the French Open final earlier this year.
