Watson lost in straight sets at Roland Garros |
Guernsey tennis player Heather Watson is out of the French Open girls' singles after losing in the first round at Roland Garros on Monday. Watson was seeded 13th in the clay-court tournament but lost 7-5 6-4 to France's Gracia Radovanovic. Fellow Briton Laura Robson, the top seed, battled past Russia's Karina Pimkina 2-6 6-3 6-3. Watson, who turned 17 in May, was the stronger server but was overpowered by her 18-year-old opponent's stroke play. And although the Briton fought back valiantly after her serve was broken, she lost in less than an hour. Watson was the first to be broken in the first set but fought back strongly only to lose 7-5. At 5-3 down in the second set it looked like it could be all over but Watson showed great spirit to fight her way back, but the older girl proved too strong. Watson is still in the junior doubles tournament with Hungarian partner Timea Babos.
