McArthur cruised through to the second round of the tennis singles |
Jersey tennis player Kirsten McArthur has lost her second round round singles match at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India. McArthur went down in straight sets to Australian Monica Wejnert 6-2, 6-3. However Scott Clayton has made it through to the third round of the boys event. He beat Elies Tukaroa from the Cook Islands 6-3, 6-3 in his second round match and will now face Sita Ram Sudanwa from India. The pair, along with the rest of the 12-strong Jersey squad and the 1,300 athletes from 71 other nations also took part in the opening ceremony in front of Indian president Pratibha Devi Singh Patil. | If this is a 'practice run' for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi then these administrative and transport issues really do need to be addressed BBC Radio Jersey's Richard Collinson |
Zane Duquemin carried the Jersey flag, whilst Clayton took part in the water ceremony. Water from all 71 nations was poured into a ceremonial fountain to symbolise the coming together of the nations. However, the organisation of the event is still being brought into question. Building work is still ongoing at some of the venues and there have been problems issuing accreditation to press and officials. "The story is really of chaos getting hold of those vital passes," said BBC Radio Jersey's Richard Collinson, who is travelling with the team. "I have personally spent 3 days along with many others from around the Commonwealth, and having been taken to an out of Games area hotel, finally achieved that necessary pass following a five hour wait."

And he says that there are also problems getting to and from the venues. "The transport situation for coaches, officials and media doesn't seem to be running smoothly. "Mini-buses are constantly circling inside the Games arena, but are nearly always empty, yet cars are at a premium to get people back to their own hotels. "If, as we are told, this is a 'practice run' for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in two years time then these administrative and transport issues really do need to be addressed," he added.
