Work is still going on at the venues with the games due to start on Sunday |
Jersey's Commonwealth Youth Games team has been met with a host of problems since arriving at the Commonwealth Youth games in Pune in India. Basic services such as electricity are still being put in to Games sites. Jersey Team Manager Paul Huddlestone told BBC Radio Jersey the athletes' village resembled a "building site." There were no telephone or internet connections for the young athletes or their coaches until Thursday, meaning it was hard for them to contact home. "It seems around 20 people are involved in every problem that comes up, so it take ages for anything to be sorted out," said BBC Radio Jersey reporter Richard Collinson, who is following the team in Pune. "Having said that the people are wonderful here and just want to help out. But in the end it seems there are simply too many cooks are spoiling the broth. "They're working 24 hours a day, but the place is still a building site." And Collinson says that workers are still putting in essential services into the area, with the opening ceremony set to get under way on Sunday. "There are still gangs of workers and heavy duty equipment everywhere," he added. "It's all being done while the competitors are trying to make themselves at home so work is going on around them." Collinson, who was with the Jersey team which travelled to Bendigo in Australia for the last Commonwealth Youth Games says the contrast between the two venues could not be more stark. He said: "It's worlds away from Bendigo. It was a university site and very easy to get around and all the venues and facilities were finished." Jersey has sent a team of 12 to the games, four swimmers, four in athletics and four tennis players.
