Jersey win keeps slim hopes alive

Johnny Gough returned to the side after illness to hit 76 for Jersey

Jersey bounced back from three straight defeats with a brilliant performance to beat Fiji by 79 runs.

Wednesday's win in Tanzania keeps alive their faint hopes of staying in World League Division Four.

Jersey's main batsmen all performed well, seeing their side to a total of 228-4, Johnny Gough top scoring on 75.

In reply, Fiji could only manage 149, Jersey's top bowler Ben Stevens taking four wickets, to mean that they could still stay up if results go their way.

In a rain-shortened 40-over match, Jersey's top order finally found form, Peter Gough and Steve Carlyon putting on 76 for the first wicket.

Then man of the match Johnny Gough took over.

Coming in at three, together with Ryan Driver, they produced a scintillating century stand, taking the score from 85-2 to 196-3 in just 13 overs.

I think the way we went about the batting was perfect

Gough was finally out for his 75 from 59 balls, while Driver was unbeaten on 45 as Jersey closed on 228-4.

In reply, Fiji had a great go at making the runs, despatching several sixes to all parts of the ground.

Stevens was Jersey's best performer with the ball, taking 4-46, figures that would have been even better if Fiji had not taken 25 runs off his last over.

Jersey captain Matt Hague was extremely pleased with his team.

"I think the way we went about the batting was perfect," he said. "Peter Gough and Steve Carlyon got us off to the good start we've been wanting. And then Jonny Gough played one of the best innings I've seen for Jersey."

There are a number of ways Jersey could still stay in World League Division Four.

Jersey are in fourth place, with Fiji and Tanzania below them, filling the two relegation slots. And, if Tanzania lose their final two games, Jersey will be safe.

Jersey also currently have a better run rate than Tanzania, who beat them in the opening group game last Sunday.

But, in their final match, Jersey face second-placed Hong Kong, who may need to win to make the final.

And, if Tanzania win their last two games, Jersey would then have to beat Hong Kong and hope they maintain that better run rate.

The weather could also play a part.

If Italy win, and Friday and Saturday are washed out, Jersey would stay up.
