Jersey cricketers Steve and Tony Carlyon have announced their retirement from the island cricket side.

Steve, 42, and Tony, 38, have played almost 50 years of cricket for Jersey between them.

Steve, who as a goalkeeper is also Jersey's most capped footballer, made his island cricket debut in 1984.

The duo say they will continue to play cricket for their club side Sporting Club Francais but feel the time is right for make way for younger players.

Tony was also an accomplished goalkeeper and also played football for Jersey but more often than not was behind his brother for the island's number one shirt.

He also made his island cricket debut aged 18 in 1988.

"Playing for Jersey is the most important thing and the best thing that's ever happened to me," Steve told BBC Radio Jersey.

To finish playing for Jersey in Tanzania is a once in a lifetime experience.

And Tony says he is now focusing his efforts on getting his son to become an island cricketer.

"In 10 years time my son Harrison will be playing for Jersey to keep the Carlyon tradition going," he said.

And Steve, who is the only man in Jersey sports history to win the island's footballer and cricketer of the year awards in the same season, said that to end their island careers in the World Cricket league was the icing on the cake.

"To finish playing for Jersey in Tanzania is a once in a lifetime experience," he said.

"Even though the team may not have performed as well as they could at this tournament, it's the strongest unit I've ever played with."

Jersey lost their final World League Division Four game to Hong Kong by 101 runs.
