Kirsten targets Italian victory

Italy captain Joe Scuderi could be the key man in Tuesday's clash with Jersey

Jersey cricket coach Peter Kirsten says the island side must beat Italy on Tuesday if they are to stay in World League Division Four.

The former South Africa Test batsman has seen his side lose their first two games at the tournament in Tanzania.

"We need to start again on Tuesday against Italy," he told BBC Jersey after the defeat to Afghanistan.

"Now we need to win three games to stay in World League Division Four and that's now our plan."

After Italy, Jersey have a winnable match against Fiji, bottom of the group, and a rather tougher proposition against unbeaten Hong Kong.

A win against the Fijians and defeat to Hong Kong would mean Tuesday's result against the Italians could well end up being the one that decides between survival or relegation back to WCL Division Five.

Jersey have a good record against the Italians, whom they beat twice in February 2007 as part of the process to prove their worthiness for ICC associate member status.

But since then the Italians have seen their fortunes turn around, beating a strong Netherlands team in the European Division One tournament this summer.

Skipper Joe Scuderi hit 84 in that victory over the Dutch and has a wealth of experience, having played state cricket for South Australia and and county cricket for Lancashire.

The match takes place at the Leaders Club in Kinondoni.
