Matthew Hague bowling for Jersey in the 34-run defeat to Tanzania

Jersey lost their first match in ICC World Cricket League Division 4, going down to a 34-run defeat to Tanzania.

Set only 143 to win, they collapsed from 69-2 to 83-7 thanks to a string of indecisive shots and a run-out.

"Tanzania fielded exceptionally and bowled well," said Jersey coach Peter Kirsten. "But to lose all those wickets after being 69-2 is embarrassing.

"There were some very poor shots. They have to do some soul searching and value their wickets more."

It had looked so much better early on when Jersey fought back well to bowl out Tanzania for 142 in 46.2 overs after the home side had looked set for a much bigger score.

All the Jersey bowlers performed well with two wickets each for youngsters Ben Stevens and Anthony Kay and also for Matt Hague, while Tony Carlyon and Peter Gough chipped in with a wicket each.

There were also two run-outs following good work from Tom Minty and Steve Carlyon in a mostly polished fielding performance.

In reply, Peter Gough smacked a four off the very first ball and after 20 overs, Jersey were 62-2, scoring at 3.3 runs an over and ahead of the required rate of only 2.86.

Then it all went horribly wrong.

Matt Hague mis-hit to mid on for 14 and Jonny Gough spooned off his hip to square leg for a duck.

If that was not bad enough, Meeku Patidar was then run out after a terrible mix-up to make it 74 for 5.

Ryan Driver, the one who still looked like he could win the match for Jersey, was then bowled around his legs for a top score of 25.

And despite Tony Carlyon's efforts, the tail did not wag.

Jersey, promoted last season, now have to win all their remaining four pool games if they are to to go up again to Division Three.
