Ward Jenner hopes the new league will keep players interested in the game |
Plans for a new cricket league encompassing both Jersey and Guernsey are set to be discussed by the islands' two cricket boards later this month. The plan would see the top flights of Jersey and Guernsey cricket amalgamated into one 11-team league played throughout the season. Currently the top four sides from each island play in the CI Championship. If the plans are approved by both islands the new league could begin as early as the 2009 season. "There's going to be quite a few logistical bits and pieces to sort out," said Jersey Cricket Board vice-chairman Ward Jenner, who is the only man to have played cricket for both islands. And he said with the island sides playing internationally more young players have been attracted to the sport so a new league will help keep them interested. "It's important that we move quickly as with all these youngsters coming through we've almost become a victim of our own success. "We need to cater for them and if we can get something very similar to this proposal in place for next season it will be to the benefit of Jersey cricketers."
