Daniel beat off the challenge of Scotsman Lewis Smith by five metres to take gold in the 400 metres individual medley. He was in fourth place after the first butterfly leg, but took the field apart during the backstroke. He extended that lead in the breaststroke and came home first in a time of 4:33:6. A great moment for Jersey, as the flag flew high and ‘Ma Normandie’ was played, reducing some of the Jersey contingent to tears. At the end of the swimming session in Bendigo the Jersey free-style ladies relay team placed seventh in an Island Record relay time of 4:21:6, beating the old record by one second. Split times came from Victoria Rebours, in a personal best of 66 seconds, Ashley Cope 66.5 seconds. Amy Pallot, a personal best of 64.2 seconds and Rosie Barret, 63.5 seconds. Earlier, Rosie Barette reached the final of the 400IM, in cool conditions at the 50-metre outdoor pool. She had qualified in eighth position for the final, and finished in the same position in that final, in a time of 5:17:62. Amy Pallot‘s 50M fly of 31.67 seconds was close to her seeded time, giving her 12th place. | | The opening ceremony at Bendigo |
