Charlie Cohen is the last island tennis player in the singles |
Jersey tennis player Charlie Cohen and 400m runner Gemma Dawkins safely made it through to their next rounds at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India. Cohen won through to the third round of the men's singles after a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kenya's Yash Rawel. Dawkins has made it through to the 400m semi-finals after coming third in her heat. But Scott Clayton lost his third round tennis match 6-4, 6-0 to the world junior 95, India's Sita Ram Sudanwa. Stephen De La Haye also suffered disappointment and did not make the high-jump final after fouling at 1.95m. Katie Gouyette and Kirsten McArthur were knocked out of the tennis doubles after losing 6-4, 6-1 to South Africa's Monica Gorny and Anastacia Simons. "Cohen had a really tough match against the Kenyan," said BBC Radio Jersey's Richard Collinson, who is with the team. "There were some very long rallies but it was a quality game." Cohen now faces New Zealand's third-seeded Finbar Tearney. "Scott Clayton played really well, seeing as he was up against the home favourite," Collinson said. "They played on the centre court with pictures of the match being transmitted throughout the city of Pune on big screens as well as being closed circuited around the area. "He did well in the first set, which he lost 6-4, but I think the heat got to him and he was dominated 6-0 in the second," Collinson added. De la Haye was unlucky to go out of the high jump. He finished 13th overall, with the top 12 making the final. The qualifiers in 11th and 12th place jumped the same height as de la Haye, but had fewer fouls and went through on count back.
