Mike Rayer eyes top two with Bedford Blues

Rayer's side have only lost three times in the league this season

Bedford Blues boss Mike Rayer has earmarked a top two finish for his side, but accepts it is a tough task.

The Blues, second in the Championship, still have to travel to top side Worcester and fourth placed London Welsh before the play-offs begin.

"The main aim is to finish in the top four, ideally second now because we've put ourselves in a decent position," Rayer told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"With the fixtures as they are we'd have to go some way to achieve that."

Sunday's 23-13 defeat at Cornish Pirates saw Rayer's side suffer their first defeat in 10 matches.

And it would seem a big ask to avoid back-to-back defeats as Bedford travel to Worcester on Saturday, who have only been beaten once this season.

"We need to put the Pirates loss to bed pretty quickly, we need to put a performance in at Worcester and try and get something out of the game," Rayer added.

"It's going to take an unbelievable effort from us because of the quality they possess and if they're on an off day we may come away with something.

"There are going to be defeats along the way but we've got to make sure we get up pretty quickly.

"This part of the season has always been looming. We understood that probably the first half of the season was a tad easier because we had some of the top sides at home."

Meanwhile former Bedford wing James Hinkins has re-joined the club as an academy coach.
