Matterson's Tigers have conceded the most points in the top eight

Castleford Tigers coach Terry Matterson says his side cannot take a Super League play-off place for granted.

The Tigers' derby win over Wakefield on Sunday has put them in fifth place on 24 points, four ahead of ninth-placed Harlequins.

"We maybe have one toe in the play-offs as there is a long way still to go," Matterson told BBC Radio Leeds.

"Our points difference isn't good, so we need to improve that and keep winning to ensure a spot in the eight."

The Tigers took local bragging rights with a 20-12 win over Wakefield at the Hearwell Stadium on Sunday.

This latest victory makes it four wins on the spin for the West Yorkshire outfit.

Matterson added: "It is a big, big result for us. It means a lot to beat Wakefield, especially with our poor record against them but getting the two points was the most important thing.

"It's four wins on the trot now and we are really building some good momentum, like last week against Salford the conditions were not good and very wet, but we dug in and got the job done.

"We are now learning to how to play in the bad weather and that is very pleasing.

"Everyone knows we can play open rugby league but in this game we dug in and got dirty and that was great to see."

Meanwhile Tigers second row Ryan Clayton has been charged by the Rugby Football League with a trip on Wakefield's Sam Obst during Sunday's derby.

He will face the RFL Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday.
