Kear's Wakefield have been leap-frogged by Castleford in Super league
Wakefield Trinity Wildcats coach John Kear says his side most cut out both the penalties and errors if they are to make the Super League play-offs.
The Wildcats lost 20-12 at home to bitter rivals Castleford on Sunday and Kear blamed the penalty count for it.
"We gave away too many penalties and that allowed them to kick the eight points difference between us," Kear told BBC Radio Leeds.
"We came up with too many errors too and need to improve that quickly."
The Wildcats now sit seventh in Super League on 22 points, two behind Castleford and two ahead of ninth-placed Harlequins.
Kear added: "We started both halves soft and that allowed them to build momentum.
"The Dean Widders tries we conceded are down to us not starting how we wanted and that cost us 12 points.
"All the right noises where being made by the players bother before the game and at half time, but obviously that wasn't transferred to actions on the pitch.
"Castleford's field position, completion rate and handling were all better than us on the day."
