Wakefield (6) 12 Tries: Brough 2, Goals: Brough 2 Castleford (8) 20 Tries: Widders 2, Goals: Westerman 6
Castleford arrested a poor run against near-neighbours Wakefield with a hard-fought derby-day victory at Belle Vue. The Tigers, who had won one of their last 11 games against Wakefield, saw Dean Widders cross early but a Danny Brough try helped draw the hosts level. Joe Westerman kicked the visitors ahead and Widders then went over for his second, before Brough responded again. But the match was ultimately decided by the boot of Westerman, who landed six penalties to see Castleford home.
Wakefield coach John Kear: "The manner of the defeat is very disappointing. I think we've given them it. There's no doubt about it. "We started soft both halves and that's 12 points and the others are penalties. So it's an easy analysis and an easy rectification within five days for the Salford game. "It doesn't matter where we are at the minute we have a chance to get in the play-offs and we made a right pig's ear of it today." Castleford coach Terry Matterson: "We are pleased - any win down here is a good win and both teams are in a similar sort of position in the table and it was a really tough game with the conditions. "We learned our lessons that's what pleases me. Two weeks ago people would have probably said that we wouldn't have been able to hang in on a game like that, work away and be really tough. "We've brought back our flamboyance and we're playing the conditions. A lot of little things were really good, we still made a lot of mistakes but we did enough to win."
