Loveridge secured the under-21 title in straight sets |
Guernsey's Alice Loveridge picked up a win, a second place and a semi-final spot in her three events at the Doncaster Grand Prix at the weekend. In the band one singles, top seed Loveridge lost a long five-set final to Filton Academy's Melissa Wright. In the women's open she got revenge on Wright but fell to the number one seed Sonja Obradovic from Norway. Loveridge finished the weekend by winning the under-21 women's singles, beating Catherine Hallows in the final. In the band one event, Loveridge had defeated second seed Sue Collier in straight sets before losing to Wright, 8-11 11-9 13-11 5-11 11-8. In the women's open, Loveridge defeated Wright in straight sets in qualifying before facing her Olympic rival and England's number five Emma Vickers. Loveridge quickly won the first two games, but lost the next two to set up a deciding game in which she found herself 10-8 up before Vickers levelled the match and Loveridge held her nerve to win 12-10. The semi-finals pitched the world 522 up against Sonja Obradovic, who is ranked 379 in the world. The experienced Norwegian number one was too strong and won in three straight games before going on to win the final and take the women's crown. Loveridge again met Vickers in the under-21 event and in a reverse of their earlier match it was her opponent who went 2-0 up. Loveridge fought back to win the next two and clawed back a seven point deficit to win on deuce 13-11. The final against Catherine Hallows was much more straightforward as Loveridge secured the title without dropping a set.
