Watson has now won five matches in Memphis, dropping just one set |
Heather Watson has progressed to the third round of the Cellular South Cup in Memphis - but fellow Briton Anne Keothavong has been knocked out. Watson, 18, beat Stephanie Foretz Gacon 6-2 5-7 6-4, breaking the French qualifier's serve to win the last three games of the match. Watson will now play Evgeniya Rodina after the Russian's surprise victory over third seed Melanie Oudin. Keothavong crashed out, losing 6-4 3-6 6-1 to Magdalena Rybarikova. World number 90 Keothavong fought back well after losing the first set but made little impression in the decider against the dominant Slovakian. The 27-year-old Londoner, who opened with an impressive 6-2 6-2 win over Canadian world number 137 Aleksandra Wozniak, created only three break points against a player ranked 15 places below her. Watson's win represents another encouraging result in the young player's career and follows up her 6-3 7-5 defeat of Czech world number 97 Andrea Hlavackova in the first round on Sunday. The Briton's next opponent, Rodina, beat the highly rated American teenager Ouden 6-1 7-5. It will be Watson's fifth match of the tournament, having eased through her qualifying matches against America's Ashley Murdock and Portugal's Michelle Larcher de Brito. Top seed Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic made an early exit on Monday, beaten 6-1 6-3 Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands. Swedish second seed Sofia Arvidsson also crashed out, losing 6-3 6-1 to Alexandra Stevenson of the United States.
