Loveridge will remain in Singapore for the mixed team event |
Guernsey table tennis player Alice Loveridge won the singles plate competition at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on Sunday. The 16-year-old missed out on a place in the last 16, but her victory in the plate put her 17th overall. Loveridge, who faced the world's best players in her age group, said: "I've learnt a lot from playing them. "I now feel more confident against them even though they were better than me I played well against them." | I went out and did my best, but obviously it wasn't enough |
She added: "I could compete with them and I wasn't really expecting that." Loveridge was knocked out of the first group stage of the singles after winning one game, but losing two. The Guernsey girl, Great Britain's only representative in the table tennis, beat Julia Wu from New Zealand 13-11 11-9 11-7 but lost to home favourite Isabelle Li 14-12 11-1 11-3 and Japan's Ayuka Tanioka 9-11 11-6 11-4 11-2. Loveridge said: "I went out and did my best, but obviously it wasn't enough. I beat the New Zealand girl which was a good win." She then stormed back in the plate competition with three victories. Loveridge will now team up with 15-year-old Italian Leonardo Mutti in the mixed team event with their first match expected to take place at 0300 BST on Tuesday. The pair will compete as Europe 3.
