Loveridge hopes to compete at the 2012 Olympics in London |
Guernsey table-tennis player Alice Loveridge will be the only player representing Great Britain in the sport at the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympics. Loveridge, 15, was declared the winner of a qualifying event in Cairo after Moldova's Sofia Polcanova, who beat her in straight sets, was ruled ineligible. The Moldovan's entry to the competition had not been ratified by authorities. Loveridge said: "The senior Olympics has been my goal for three years - the junior Olympics is a step towards it." She added: "This is a massive opportunity." The qualification means Loveridge will now not be taking part in the final qualifying event in Italy, something she admits to having slightly mixed feelings about. Loveridge said: "It's a lot of ranking points you get from those tournaments, you play a lot of matches, it's really intense so I was looking forward to the tournament. But I'd rather go to the [Youth] Olympics."
