Tockwith teenager Sarah Moore hopes to make a career out of touring cars |
Yorkshire teenager Sarah Moore has added the Autosport Awards British Club Driver of the Year award to her growing list of accolades. She shared a stage with F1 world champion Jensen Button at the Grosvenor House Hotel ceremony in London. The 16-year-old from Tockwith near York became the first female driver to win a Touring Car series event in 2009. She told BBC Radio York: "I had a lot of confidence. I knew I would be able to do well." Problems with the car hampered Moore in the first two races of the season, but that proved only a temporary setback. "Come the third and fourth races of the season, I got two wins on the trot, so it was good," she said. Three more victories followed in the series as she clinched the title. Moore said she was grateful for the extra publicity gained by virtue of being a rare female success in motorsport, but that she would rather be judged purely on her own merits. "It's got a lot of people's attention. It's shown that girls can do what boys can do and I've proved that this year." This year also saw Moore nominated for the BBC's Junior Sports Personality of the Year award, which was won by diver Tom Daley. Moore will defend her Ginetta Junior title next year with the website subscription team YRC.
