West Indies crumble again
Neil McKenzie
Neil McKenzie's knock of 73 was crucial

South Africa defended a relatively low batting total with a fierce bowling display to win the sixth one-day international against the West Indies in Trinidad.

It was their fifth consecutive one-day victory against a bruised West Indian side which showed some improvement with the ball and in the field.

But only Brian Lara managed to make any real headway with the bat against South Africa's pace attack.

And when he was run out for 41 by a direct hit from the lightning quick Jonty Rhodes, the West Indian middle and lower order collapsed.

Andre Nel against West Indies
Nel made a distinguished debut
Shaun Pollock and debutant fast bowler Andre Nel picked up three cheap wickets each while Mark Boucher took four catches.

Nel, in particular, must have impressed his selectors.

He took the wicket of Daren Ganga early on to give his team the perfect start and then had Carl Hooper and Ricardo Powell caught behind off successive balls.

Ridley Jacobs avoided the hat-trick ball before Nel limped out of the action with figures of three for 20 off 8.1 overs.

Earlier, South Africa - who made four changes from the side that took an unassailable 4-1 series lead in Barbados - had stuttered to 190 all out in their innings.

Only a third wicket stand of 92 between Neil McKenzie and Justin Kemp gave the innings any substance as the tourists lost wickets at regular intervals.

McKenzie made 73 from 117 balls, while Kemp hit 46 in 70 balls.

They repaired the damage caused by the excellent Cameron Cuffy's early double strike.

It was nice to see some guys who haven't seen much action come in and perform well. I'm chuffed
Shaun Pollock
Herschelle Gibbs was bowled for one and Boeta Dippenaar lbw after a painstaking seven in 37 balls. Cuffy finished with two for 26 from ten tight overs.

But after Kemp fell lbw to Carl Hooper, South Africa lost their way again.

Hooper (2-27) bowled Jacques Kallis for three and then Corey Collymore ended McKenzie's defiance.

Jonty Rhodes scampered a typical 25, but no-one else reached double figures as Kerry Jeremy cleaned up the tail to finish with three for 48.

South Africa now have a 5-1 lead in the seven-match series.

And their captain Pollock said they refused to be rocked by the controversy surrounding some of their players' off-field activities.

All five of the players who admitted to smoking marijuana in an Antiguan hotel room a month ago were included in the side.

"We dealt with the matter as a team a month ago and we put it behind us, so the actual fact that it came out wasn't something that was going to rock the side," Pollock said.

"But just the fact that the news was out at home and that maybe there were a few comments flying around made the guys very motivated to come out and play well."

And he said the scandal should not taint South Africa's successful tour.

"I don't think it has tarnished our success at all. It's been a brilliant effort by the guys on the tour.

Pollock also paid tribute to the endeavours of unsung squad members like Nel.

"It was nice to see some guys who haven't seen much action come in and perform well. I'm chuffed."
