| Gibbs century beats Windies West Indies captain Carl Hooper plays a sweep shot Second one-day international, Antigua: South Africa beat West Indies by eight wickets Click here Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis inspired South Africa to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in the second one-day international at Antigua. Gibbs (104) and Kallis (78 not out) put on 179 runs for the second wicket before the tourists eased past the Windies target of 220 with 25 balls to spare, levelling the best-of-seven series at 1-1. The pair came together with the score at 11 for one and tormented the home attack for 38 overs before Gibbs fell to Neil McGarrell. The opener smashed three sixes and eight fours during his 141-ball knock, while Kallis was still there when Jonty Rhodes (21 not out) struck the winning runs in the 46th over. Right-hander Kallis hit two sixes and five fours during his near two-hour stay at the crease.
Three sixes Earlier Shivnarine Chanderpaul marked his return to the West Indies side with an aggressive half-century to lift the home side to 220 for eight. Chanderpaul was recalled in place of Ricardo Powell and justified his inclusion with 60 off 54 balls before he was run out. The left-hander set the tone for his innings by dancing down the wicket to strike Lance Klusener for six with his first scoring stroke. In all he hit three sixes and helped add 86 in only 13 overs with his captain Carl Hooper. Chris Gayle and Leon Garrick put on an opening stand of 63 before Garrick was run out for 16. Well-judged catch The Jamaican was sent back by Gayle, but was left well short of his ground by Jacques Kallis' throw. Gayle dominated the early scoring and had reached an entertaining 50 from 72 balls when he took one risk too many. He came down the wicket to Klusener and tried to lift the all-rounder over the top but succeeded only in finding Shaun Pollock. The South African captain took a well-judged running catch to leave the home side 80 for two. Brian Lara made a studied 13 from 38 balls before falling to the same combination. In looking to accelerate he tried to drive Klusener over mid-off but his hand came off the bat and Pollock did the rest. Hooper was immediately at ease alongside Chanderpaul and matched his partner stroke for stroke. He eased his way to 48 from 46 balls in typically graceful fashion, striking four fours and a six before falling to his opposite number Shaun Pollock. The South African captain was the most economical of the tourists' attack. His ten overs cost 34, while Kallis was the most successful with two for 38.
