| Caddy ready to pack his bags Harris (l) and Dixon savour their success BBC Sport Online's Stuart Roach meets some of David Dixon's backroom staff. If amateur hero Dave Dixon decides to turn professional after winning the amateur silver medal at Lytham, he will not be taking colourful caddy Shaun Harris with him. The larger-than-life bag man was a calming influence all week as Dixon finished tied 30th in a remarkable week. "It has been a wonderful experience and we have loved every minute of it, but I could not turn pro with Dave," said Harris.
"I run my own kitchen fitting business and that has to come first, but he always knows I am there to help if he needs some help." Harris, a self-confessed hacker with a 15 handicap, had a couple of scares earlier in the week. He had to dash back to Bridgewater on Tuesday to finish some kitchen business but was back in time to be on the bag on Wednesday. Then, at the 15th on Sunday, he nearly tumbled into a bunker as he and Dixon lined up a putt. "I was close to going in and Dave just curled up laughing," said Harris.
"He was trying to stand over the putt and was still laughing, but it has been that kind of week." Dixon added: "I couldn't see what I was doing when I hit my putt as I had tears in my eyes." He had tears of pride soon after when he stepped up to accept the amateur medal, but he has not yet decided whether to turn pro or not. "Where do I go from here? Home," he said. "I will give it a few days to let it all sink in then I will think about what I do now. "It is every amateur's dream to play in The Open and to do well is even better." "Everything has just been fantastic. Just to be part of the Open has been great and winning the silver medal has been awesome.
Another huge Dixon fan at Lytham this week has been Theresa Dixon, his mother. She walked round outside the ropes but was getting regular waves from her son during the final round on Sunday. Theresa could not disguise her pride as Dixon strolled towards the amateur medal, but she now has her eye on the prize. "It would look really nice on my mantelpiece," she said. "I would have to move a few things to squeeze it on but I would be proud to show it off. "It has been such a wonderful week and to see David matching some of the best players in the world is remarkable." |
