Fourth round Monty watch
Colin Montgomerie
Will Monty be smiling on Sunday evening?
All the action from Colin Montgomerie's fourth round in The Open at Royal Lytham.

Click refresh for updates. Latest hole first - scroll down for earlier action.

Hole eighteen:

Monty gets a good round of applause from the gallery around the final green, but it's little consolation as he's in the rough again. A fine chip and chase takes him to six feet and he holes for a 72.

Another Major chance has gone.
Four under, six behind.

Hole seventeen:

It looks like another disaster for Monty as he's stuck in the bunker after two poor approach shots. He splashes out and miraculously holes out to save his par, giving an ironic smile.
Four under, five behind.

Hole sixteen:

At this stage Monty's par seems like a success - but the crowd have realised that they are not watching the winner and the atmosphere with the group has gone flat.
Four under, six behind.

Hole fifteen

Monty has a nightmare - time after time his approach play has been world class only for his putting to let him down. That's the cae again as he bogeys the 15th to effectively end his OPen challenge.
Four under, five behind.

Hole fourteen:

A wonderful eight iron from 180 yards sets up a second successive birdie chance - but it catches the top lip of the hole and wobbles past. The look on Monty's face says, maybe it won't be my day.
Five under, four shots off the lead.

Hole thirteen:

Monty booms a long drive berwwen the bunkers and sets up a long eagle putt. He rolls to 18 inches and takes the birdie chance. But David Duval is keeping the gap at the top of the leaderboard the same.
Five under, four shots off lead.

Hole twelve:

A good saving putt for par boosts Monty's spirits, but it's still not enough to shoot him up the leaderboard.
Four under; four shots off lead

Hole eleven:

Monty knows he must do something at Lytham's last par five to have any chance of getting back into the chasing pack. A great bunker shot gives him every chance of birdie, but he can't make it, and only gets par.
Four under; three shots off lead

Hole ten:

After several composed holes, an over-zealous birdie putt leaves Monty several feet past the hole. His ball agonisingly stays out the next time too, and all Monty's recent good work is undone.
Four under; three shots off lead

Hole nine:

Monty gets himself safely on the green but leaves himself too much to do for birdie. He putts well though to get close and an eventual three.

That makes it 35 for his final front nine - solid, but not spectacular enough so far to get him back to the top of the leaderboard.
Five under; three shots off lead

Hole eight:

With the crowd firmly behind him, Monty looks for a good iron at the eighth tee. He pushes it to the edge of the rough on the right, but produces a finely judged second to avoid dangerous bunkers on the left and land within birdie range. He comes agonisingly close to a third straight birdie, but must be content with a good four..
Five under; three shots off lead

Hole seven:

On the second consecutive par five, Monty bounces his second shot nicely onto the middle of the green. His attempt for eagle falls short but he makes no mistake from three feet and claws another shot back.
Five under; three shots off lead

Hole six:

Both Montgomerie and Els find bunkers on the par five sixth, but both recover superbly. Els fails to make birdie, but Monty holes his putt from 12 feet for his first birdie of the day.
Four under; three shots off lead

Hole five:

Monty's first loose tee shot puts him in trouble at the short fifth. He takes two shots to escape the bunker and can only make four. So it's another bogey, and Monty needs to turn things round quickly if he is to keep his Open dream alive.
Three under; four shots off lead

Hole four:

Colin Montgomerie
Monty dropped two shots in the first five holes

Supporters urge Monty on as he tees off at the fourth. Striking the ball well, he solidly reaches the green once more in two. He comes close to recovering his dropped shot with a well-judged first putt, but has to make do with par.
Four under; three shots off lead

Hole three:

Montgomerie is looking focused, hits another good iron off the tee and a more cautious approach to the green. But his first putt rolls well past the hole and his second stays on the high side. The first sign of the smile turning to a scowl as he makes a bogey five.
Four under; three shots off lead

Hole two:

A nice drive puts Monty in pole position on the fairway. Finding himself 168 yards from the pin, he refuses to play safe by going right of the pin, and instead fires in a sweet second to within 12 feet on the left side. He narrowly misses his birdie chance, but secures a solid par to continue his confident start.
Five under; one shot off lead

Hole one:

It's crunch time for Colin Montgomerie as he steps onto the first tee alongside Ernie Els - the Scot begins his final round one shot off the lead.

His opening iron veers left but the ball refuses to be drawn into the greenside bunkers and stays on the fringe. He needs to hole an awkward putt for par, and duly does.
Five under; one shot off lead
