| To seize the day It's great to see Langer and Woosnam at the top BBC's 'voice of golf' Peter Alliss knows that the dramatics ups and downs of third round means The Open is all to play for on Sunday. Saturday was an extraordinary day of to-ing and fro-ing, but has set up the potential for a cracking final round. There will be some players, such as Colin Montgomerie who should be feeling quite happy while some will feel a chance has slipped through their fingers. It's a strange mix of ancient and modern at the top with David Duval, Ian Woosnam, Bernhard Langer and Alex Cejka all sharing the lead going into Sunday. Duval had the most fantastic round, playing beautifully, and I'm delighted to see Langer and Woosnam there.
It was wonderful to see Woosnam leading the putting, that hasn't happened for a long time. Montgomerie is still in there, only one shot behind as the others came back to him at the end. He missed a few fairways and greens, and didn't hit as straight as we know he can, but he is certainly not out of it. Tiger Woods didn't play so well, making a lot of elementary mistakes on Saturday. He hit a lot of drives out to the right and on a couple of occasions was quite fortunate, but I wouldn't rule him out either.
Basically, with the field bunched like they are, it is still very much anyone's game, especially at this particular course. If someone's in a position at the right moment coming to the end, four fours might do the job for you, Whereas, at some of the other courses, you might be looking for a three, such as at the 18th at St Andrews. This is a very quirky course and it's the mistakes that are going to be so costly, not the great shots. |
