| Another good day for battling Monty Friday was another good day for Colin Montgomerie BBC Sport's Ken Brown is full of praise as Colin Montgomerie hangs on to the lead in the second round of the Open. I think Colin Montgomerie did exceptionally well today after getting into a bit of trouble at the third. He battled away well and hit some wonderful drives, particuarly down the seventh, 14th and 18th where he really ripped them down the middle. Colin also had a bit of luck, like at the 11th where he pulled his long iron and it somehow managed to wriggle out of the bunker.
But from there he got down in two and made a birdie. Whenever he made a mistake he managed to salvage it, so it was a good day for Colin Montgomerie. Tiger Woods was still not at his best - he's not 100% that's for certain. He lost a lot of shots to the right and probably is not quite timing the ball. He's so fast with his lower body that sometimes he can't quite square the club up, and other times he just releases the right hand and pulls the odd shot. But the difference on Friday was that he birdied all the par fives - yesterday he just got pars on them. And although he's four shots behind he can sometimes find the magic - you can never count Tiger out.
Wherever he is in the field you can always hear his footsteps coming up behind and if he gets going he can really shoot a low number. Sam Torrance must be absolutely delighted with the performances of the Europeans ahead of the Ryder Cup. Pierre Fulke has struggled with his form and injury this year and hasn't really played much good golf, so he's coming into form at just the right time. And Jesper Parnevik is in position to win the big cheque he needs if he's going to make his way into the side automatically. As far as this weekend is concerned there are still lots of possible winners. Darren Clarke has always got to have a good chance on the Links course, Parnevik has been runner-up at The Open twice and Vijay Singh's another player who could come through. |
