Grady: Duval deserved it

Duval has finally proved himself
BBC golfing pundit Wayne Grady gives his verdict on David Duval's deserved win and Ian Woosnam's heartbreak at The Open.

The final round started off with around 20 players within three shots of the lead and it looked like we were going to have a play-off.

But Niclas Fasth got himself out there in the morning and put seven under on the board, setting a score there for them to chase.

David Duval proved equal to the task, playing a great front nine and coming home strongly.

His tremendous effort means that David has finally lost that tag as the best player never to have won a Major, and rightly so.

Certainly in the past, he should have won in the Masters a couple of times.

Two shots lower and Woosie would have found himself in the top ten

But he's shown he's definitely a quality player and someone who deserved to win a big tournament.

As for Ian Woosnam, he'll be bitterly disappointed by what happened at the second tee.

It wasn't a needed story on Sunday.

There was plenty of golf to be played and that wasn't needed.

It's always going to be a question as to whose fault it was. Was it the caddie's or was it Ian's?

But it doesn't really matter in the end. It just happened.

Of course, it's unfortunate and unsettling which you can see when he made a couple of bogies not long after that.

Two shots lower and Woosie would have found himself in the top ten, but he's still only one tournament away from making it.

He sits in 12th at the moment and the captain has two picks.

But I think with the way Ian has been playing lately that he will have to play his way into the side.

He won't be relying on a pick to get into the side.
