| The main attractions Blackpool Tower or Ernie Els? By BBC Sport Online's Stuart Roach at Royal Lytham Just down the road, on Blackpool's Golden Mile, Bernard Manning has been added to the more traditional tourist attractions. The oh-so-blue comedian is doing summer season at the resort, but has suddenly found himself overshadowed as The Open roadshow rolls into town. So, just who is providing the new Blackpool illuminations this week? We consider some of the main attractions on show at Royal Lytham St Annes. The Pleasure Beach: Fred Couples spent half of the opening day in the sand, taking four shots to escape a greenside bunker at the 14th. The Big One: Tiger Woods, predictably, is a massive attraction. The crowds following his every move are gigantic, though his opening round proved something of a rollercoaster ride before the world's number one golfer carded a level par 71. The Tower: South African giant Ernie Els nearly pulled out of The Open with back trouble. Instead, he has proved a tower of strength, two osteopaths ensuring he not only started, but also played himself into contention with a solid opening round. The Big Dipper: Jim Furyk was two under par and emerging as a front runner for the title when he suddenly took a dramatic nosedive down the leaderboard by taking a 10 at the 11th hole. Valhalla: Hailed as the "biggest dark ride in the world" Blackpool's latest 15m attraction is a tribute to Viking warriors. On Friday, that could have included Jesper Parnevik, who led the Scandinavian charge up the leaderboard with a superb 68. The Illuminations: Colin Montgomerie lit up Lytham on day one with a stunning 65 to lead by three, but there were also flashes on brilliance from Jeff Maggert, who claimed an albatross at the sixth on Thursday, and Frank Lickliter, who aced the fifth on Friday. |
