| Waqar hails team effort Pakistan celebrate another wicket at Trent Bridge Waqar Younis led from the front as his Pakistani team beat Australia by 36 runs at Trent Bridge. The paceman finished with figures of six for 59 only two days after recording the second best figures in one-day international history of seven for 36. However he was quick to play down his own achievements and trumpet the efforts of his team after they had beaten the world champions.
And he hailed the win as a psychological blow ahead of the contest between the two teams in the final of the Triangular series at Lord's on Saturday. "We played really well, especially Salim Elahi with the bat, and the fielders really backed up the bowlers," he said. "Winning is always a boost but this win will give us a lot of strength ahead of the final," he added. Waqar complimented Adam Gilchrist on his dazzling 44-ball innings of 70 but declared that "careless shots" cost Australia the game. His opposite number Steve Waugh agreed wholeheartedly. "Adam gave us a chance of winning with a superb innings but some careless shots cost us and it was all over. "Losing wickets makes it hard in the last 10 overs particularly when it's not that easy to see but we got what we deserved. "We weren't too flash in the field and we've got some work to do before the final," Waugh added. |
