Failed to establish a regular place thereafter, but reminded the selectors of his ability by scoring 108 not out in Surrey's B&H Cup quarter-final win over Sussex, which earned him the Gold Award.

Andrew Caddick

Right arm fast bowler; right-hand batsman

A key member of England's attack because of his ability to bowl a tight line and length with the new ball.

Has not matched his wicket-taking feats in Test cricket, however, and figures of four for 19 against South Africa in Johannesburg more than two years ago are his best so far.

Paul Collingwood

A spell in Australian club cricket during the winter transformed Collingwood from a promising county all-rounder into a player of international potential.

In prolific form with the bat for Durham in the County Championship but equally happy in the one-day game, as shown by scores of 89 and 95 not out in the B&H Cup.

Dominic Cork

A proven performer performer in Test cricket, he is now back in the one-day squad after an absence of more than four years.

Cork played in the 1996 World Cup but was not suited by conditions in the sub-continent and will be keen to improve a modest record with both bat and ball.

Robert Croft

Keeps his place despite taking only two wickets at a cost of almost 40 each during the one-day series in Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Normally a reliable performer who varies his flight intelligently, he can also supply useful runs in the lower middle order.

Seen as a one-day specialist by the selectors, Ealham has made more than 60 appearances since making his debut in 1996.

Enjoyed his finest moment in a one-day international when he took five for 15 against Zimbabwe in Kimberley on the 1999-2000 tour.

Darren Gough

An automatic selection in both forms of the game, Gough can always be relied on to give 150 per cent in England's cause.

Only managed four wickets in six one-day games in Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the winter, but has almost 140 victims in total at an average of under 25.

Ben Hollioake

Still a teenager when he began his international career with an astonishing innings of 63 off 48 balls against Australia at Lord's in 1997.

Scored 98 to help Surrey to an eight-wicket in the B&H Cup final in two months later, but has yet to turn his immense natural talent into consistent performances at international level.

Nick Knight

Missed last summer's triangular series with a finger injury, but has scored almost 2,000 one-day runs for England, including three hundreds.

Clinched his place with an innings of 103 for his county in the B&H Cup quarter-finals, even though he finished on the losing side against Nottinghamshire.

Alan Mullally

Highly rated around the world, Mullally's left arm swing and seam bowling provides welcome variety.

Now free of a rib problem which dogged him for most of last year, Mullally hopes to use the competition to press his claims for a recall to the Test squad.

Owais Shah

Rated one of the best young batsmen in the country, Shah was added to the squad when Graham Thorpe suffered an injury.

Led England's under-19 side to victory at the 1997-98 Youth World Cup and has also toured Australia and Sri Lanka with England A.

Scored his maiden double century against Derbyshire earlier this season.

Graham Thorpe

Happy to be Alec Stewart's first lieutenant after skippering England in the one-dayers in Sri Lanka earlier this year and ending up on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline.

Thorpe can be relied on to keep the scoreboard ticking over with ones and twos, but would love to reach three figures for the first time.

Marcus Trescothick

Called into the squad as a replacement against West Indies and Zimbabwe last summer, Trescothick did not waste the opportunity.

Made a half century in his first appearance and went on to become a regular in the Test and one-day sides. Scored three B&H Cup centuries in seven days and can also do a useful job if called on to bowl.

Michael Vaughan

Made his limited overs debut in Sri Lanka earlier this year after being added to the squad as a replacement for Nasser Hussain.

Only managed 35 runs in two innings, but his recent 125 not out off 128 balls for Yorkshire against Somerset in the B&H Cup proved he has the required range of strokes for one-day cricket.
