Australia captain Steve Waugh took his players away from the post-match presention ceremony after player Michael Bevan was struck by a beer can. The one-day series, which also involved England, has been plagued by pitch invasions by fans, forcing officials to increase security measures at grounds. Waugh made his feelings clear after the incident.
"It was a very disappointing end to a great day with one idiot ruining it," said the Australian captain. "There need to be lessons learned from this. Bevan was hit full in the face and it could have been serious. "It's just pure luck that it hit him in a spot that doesn't appear to be too serious and I know I keep harping on about it but someone will get killed - there's no doubt about it," Waugh concluded. Pakistan captain Waqar Younis, named man-of-the-series, added: "It's a shame the way it's (the final) ended." Police moved among the crowd beneath the balcony trying to find whoever was responsible for hurling the beer can.
"I have been icing it but I won't really know how it is until the morning. "It could have hit my eye, nose or mouth, so I was lucky in that respect. I have probably got away with it. "The person must have known he could have done something serious. I have spoken to the police and they have taken details." MCC secretary Roger Knight agreed it was a disappointing end to the day. "It was an absolute disgrace on behalf of that one person and has ruined the whole day. "We shall look through all the close-circuit TV coverage and the television film and if we can identify the person who threw the can we will take it as far as possible," he warned.
Bevan was immediately examined by a doctor based at the ground and it was confirmed he had only suffered bruising. Knight added: "I was very happy with the way the rest of the day went. The crowd's behaviour was excellent and something like this could happen in any situation - it's very hard to legislate against." A week ago in an incident involving Pakistan fans, a steward was badly hurt at Headingley after a pitch invasion. England skipper Alec Stewart was forced to concede the match with the tourists just four runs away from a legitimate victory. Two days later, Waugh pulled his team off the pitch when a firecracker exploded near Brett Lee on the boundary. | |
